Black Jewels: Mikal

I don’t know why I’m thinking about this all of a sudden, but I realized how aggravated I am that I don’t know in particular what happened to Sylvia’s youngest son, Mikal.

Who raises him?

No, really. Think about it.

Anne outlined several bad parental choices for the boy (his father, Sylvia’s father) but she didn’t give us any good choices either. I get Mikal living with Tersa during his grief period. But surely Anne couldn’t have meant to imply a young child would grow up in the care of a half-mad woman and a Journeymaid Black Widow. Tersa may be present 60% of the time but I don’t think she would qualify as able to raise a young child without help in anyone’s eyes; and Allista is a very young woman who I doubt intends to act in that capacity. Simply put, in my mind it’s a disservice for Mikal as a healthy growing boy in need of a stable family home.

We can infer Daemon and Jaenelle don’t raise the boy at the Hall; certainly I don’t think Daemon considers him a son, as we only see mention of Mikal in passing after the death of Daemon’s first wife and moving forward into his relationship with Surreal.

I ask again: what happened to Mikal? Did other relatives take him in? Did he become adopted by a family?

Yes, yes, I know he’s “adopted” by the SaDiablos – after all, he’s Daemon and Lucivar’s stepbrother, technically, once Saetan marries Sylvia (though that doesn’t happen until the woman is dead, so maybe legally not?). But none of the SaDiablos are literally raising him on a day-to-day basis despite how much they may be a presence in his life. As much as I wouldn’t mind seeing Beron take a firm role in raising his brother, I somehow don’t think that is the case either.

Grrr. This is going to bother me to no end!

Other thoughts, opinions, and/or theories are welcome!

He stays with Tersa and the Black Widow journeymaid that looks after her so that he can live where he’s comfortable. But I always assumed that Jaenelle — especially Jaenelle — took a hand in raising him?

I don’t know. It strikes me that there should be more to it than that. I feel like he’s been completely orphaned and his life is reduced to Tersa’s cottage and whenever the SaDiablos show up to look in on him or take him out for a treat. I just don’t know. They are good kind people but my feelings are mixed on this resolution. I guess I would expect emotional fallout somewhere along the way.
