The year wherein a pandemic ate the world.

This year I wrote and posted:
6 stories for an approximate total of 50,000 words.

Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you’d predicted?
About what I predicted once I changed that prediction to reflect the state of the world in 2020. Who could have known just how much a pandemic would change everything we took for granted?

What pairing/genre/fandom did you write that you would never have predicted in January?
I stayed in my comfort zone because wanting to be comforted has been all I strove for this year. In that regard, McSpirk is like a beloved childhood blankie. Don’t take that blankie from me when everything’s on fire, ok?

I did manage to write more Sam Kirk, though. That’s a small plus – and unanticipated when I set my yearly goals. But very strong separated-brothers feelings have been plaguing me for most of 2020. True fact.

What’s your own favorite story of the year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you happiest?
In Good Hands. It’s the separated bro feels I mentioned above. 2020 was the year for wallowing in separation and yet remaining hopeful for reunions. While I enjoy my little silo of the world at times, there are some people I have missed greatly having around.

Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them?
It felt like a risk to write at all. It also felt like it was a risk I should take but one I didn’t fully invest in regardless. Suddenly with
more time to write (a change in my work pattern) should have been motivation enough, but instead I mostly felt at odds, as uncertainty has shadowed most of 2020.

From my past year of writing, what was….
My best story of this year:
Difficulty Engaged. I finished it! It stayed on a six-month hiatus but in the end, I was able to wrap it up to my satisfaction. I am happy I did that.

My most popular story of this year (based on comments/kudos):
Curses and Cures. I can’t believe I had never written a soulmate-mark fic before. Good thing I rectified that oversight!

Story of mine most under-appreciated by the universe, in my opinion:
Regrets Are Meant To Be Shared.

Most fun story to write:
A Greater Blessing. Kirk as a bumbling pet owner is a naturally hilarious premise.

Story with the single sexiest moment:
A Greater Blessing. Word to the wise, don’t flirt while leaving your pet(s) unattended.

Most “Holy crap, that’s wrong, even for you” story:
None. I play it safe when writing, to be honest.

Story that shifted my own perceptions of the characters:
None. Characters are lovely as they are written, however they are written and in however many nuanced ways!

Hardest story to write:
Difficulty Engaged. I knew I wanted to finish it – and did – but getting to the end was only achieved through some deep, thoughtful sessions with my muse.

Biggest Disappointment:
None. I am happy to say I wrote in 2020.

Biggest Surprise:
None.

Most Unintentionally Telling Story:
In Good Hands. It was slightly intentional to drag readers through a familial relationship that badly needed mending, with some courage sprinkled in for good measure.

Fic-writing goals for 2021:
To write. I am not fully convinced this is the year for retirement. If I can eek out a few more stories, I think that would be a positive thing.
