Oh, TV

BBC is intent on making me sad and confused this season with Merlin.

In other news, I rewatched Amok Time and it never gets old. Anyone’s thoughts on why Spock chose to have McCoy come along to the ceremony? Spock made a point of implying that Jim is not simply his captain. It seems like an afterthought – or a slightly embarassed admission – that he wishes McCoy to join the party as well? It’s not really explained, of course, because I think the writers knew they needed a way out for Kirk during the fight and McCoy provided that plot device but the dialogue is also purposefully vague enough so it’s like the audience is being told we don’t have to explain Spock’s thoughts to you on this. Just go with it.

Not that I don’t love this scene and in particular the idea that Spock holds McCoy in high regard… XD

Spock had the right to have people who are part of his life, his “family” stand at his side to support him during the marriage ceremony which was looking to be a very difficult thing for him to endure. His sudden inclusion of McCoy did show a respect for him and also spoke to the fact that perhaps after all they’ve been through he did actually consider McCoy more than an acquaintance but an actual friend. I thought it was incredibly moving the first time I saw it (I was very young but still moved.) Anyway, in short, he included McCoy because he considered McCoy a “friend” even if it had never been spoken of out loud before.

Mostly that’s what I want to believe. It warms my heart to think Spock has a fondness for McCoy that it isn’t on a purely professional level. I always, always wanted to see McCoy address this implication during the episode – and for me, though he didn’t directly say anything aloud about it, once Spock had “killed” Jim, McCoy simply walked over to him, no blame in his tone, and asked for orders. Also, there’s the fact that at the beginning of the episode the doctor was the first one to point out to Jim something was wrong with Spock – so maybe it’s just more proof that as a concerned friend McCoy keeps apprised of Spock’s well-being?

I agree with you on how Spock ask McCoy to come to ceremony. It was like, “Oh yeah you can come too.” It was almost as if Spock asks him, because the doctor was there and Spock didn’t want to offend him after making such a big deal of it to Jim. I will say though had it been anyone else in the lift with Spock and Jim, I don’t think they would have been invited, regardless of pleasantries, so I feel there is a sense of friendship there. It’s not that McCoy is an afterthought but Spock in his highly agitated state of mind and being in Jim’s presence, (because let’s face it Kirk has a huge presence that most get drawn to slash or no slash), was too out of it to think about it. Also he declares McCoy to be his friend to T’Pau and that is huge since the idea of friendship on Vulcan is rather taboo, (I’m basing that on Spock’s admission to Kirk during “The Naked Time,”) But once again while Spock introduces with great care his captain to T’Pau, McCoy is left to introduce himself. All in all the point I’m making is it’s not that McCoy is not important to Spock, because I believe that he is to some degree in this episode and only becomes more so as the show progresses. It’s that Jim is more important in the long run.

You make so many good points! It never even occurred to me that Spock did in fact not introduce McCoy to T’Pau, despite the many times I’ve seen this episode. Maybe it’s that at this point in time Spock isn’t certain how much of a “friend” McCoy is. He can’t very well say “this is the other human I interact with most often… we argue.” Poor Spock. Don’t you know it’s natural to argue with family?

I think that is very much the case. It seems to take Spock a bit to warm up to Kirk, so it would be natural for him to do the same with McCoy. It hasn’t occurred to Spock yet how close he really is to him.

Sad and confused is right. How out of left field was that?! Also, don’t you just want to punch Morgana in the face every time she does anything? I do.

I can’t even talk about the loss or the upcoming plot. Can’t even. It’s that bad. If something phenomenal doesn’t happen this series – like a magic reveal – I am not certain I can take a 6th series. I get Merlin being more cautious now with his magic (let’s admit it, making smoke horses for the fun of it in broad daylight was never one of his brighter ideas) but he’s literally got like his two best friends on the throne of Camelot. Between his secrecy and Morgana’s schemes, no one is ever going to learn there are people who use magic for good rather than evil. I just want to thunk my head down on the nearest solid surface.
