What Makes a Reccable Story?

Date:

So, I was in the midst of writing a new Kirk/Spock/McCoy story when I started thinking about which of my stories get recced and why. I must be doing something better in those, as opposed what happens in my usual triumvirate-on-the-fly.

Here are the few I know of which have ended up on a rec list somewhere and my reasoning as to why they seemed well-liked:

Of Sacraments and War – Easy one. Reaper!Bones. He’s always a crowd-pleaser.
If I Had to Keep You – Um, post-STID Kirk and McCoy feels?
Along Comes a Stranger – Because it was crazy dramatic. And episodic.
Fair and Fine – Pon Farr. Yup, pon farr.
All Fall Down – Spock/McCoy sexual encounter? Like, the only one I’ve written besides the pon farr story.
Playtime – I might have seen this one on a rec list a long time ago (my memory is terrible). It’s a kid!fic with beleaguered Pike. That would be why.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t look to me like there is a common theme, unless you consider that readers like an emotional punch, whether it is tears, laughter, fear, or lust.

Any thoughts?

for myself, I have my favorites but there is really no rhyme or reason….depends on my mood…if I am looking for comfort words…I go with beleaguered Pike….sometimes I want the more mature triumvirate themed friendships and love…..

I’m with you in that I don’t have a rhyme or reason. If I get to the end of a story, and I think damn, I want to read that again, then for me it is a story worth recommending to others.

IDK about recs, but I know stories tend to get more publicity (I guess that’s the right word?) if they’re done for a challenge or something, like a Big Bang or one of the challenges over at the J&B comm or something. More readers = higher chance someone will rec? And I know some reccers look through their bookmarks for a particular trope (like Pon Farr or kid!fic) and rec based on that.

You’re right most of the rec lists I see focus on specific pairings or troupes. I guess I just pick recs differently, because I read all kinds of stuff and if a story engages me to the point where I can’t put it down, then I feel like I have to run over to my journal and post a rec! :)

Right? I’m not very good at reccing (or commenting, I need to start doing that more OTL) but I read all sorts of stories so tbh it’d be hard not to just rec every other thing, rofl…we have way too many talented writers in fandom!
