Title: Jim’s Good Idea
Author: klmeri
Fandom: Star Trek AOS
Pairing: pre-Kirk/McCoy
Summary: Comment!drabble for today’s jim_and_bones‘s pic of Karl Urban as a stage actor in which he is wearing period clothing. Cross-posted at jim_and_bones.
Jim waits, wide-eyed, for the rant but he receives an unnerving silence instead—that is, if one discounts the little noises Bone is making, noises Jim can’t quite identify. He says helpfully, trying to draw McCoy’s attention again, “This is the part where you say ‘Damn it, Jim!’ or ‘Goddamn it, kid!’ or…”
Bones makes an absent gesture and goes back to inspecting his ruffled shirt. “Actually, this is… pretty good.”
His mouth forms an O. “G-good?”
Sticking out a booted foot and admiring the leather, Bones says, “Yeah.”
Then Bones turns to face him and Jim finally understands. His face flares red. “Bones, you, ah, you look, ah,…”
McCoy’s mouth rises at the edges in a self-satisfied smirk. Then Bones is striding over, all long legs and tightly fitted knee-high leather boots, soft beige pants and a flimsy white shirt open to the waist, displaying a nicely tan chest. He claps the swaying Jim on the shoulder. “Thanks. For once, your costume idea doesn’t suck.”
And Jim can’t respond properly, not even to that back-handed compliment; all he manages is a meek “Glad I could h-help.”
McCoy is nodding, calling as he walks away, “See you at the party, Jim.”
Jim’s eyes linger on lovely bits of the retreating man, and he may or may not (mostly he does, shamelessly) shuffle to the open door and crane his neck into the corridor to keep watching Bones for as long as he can. Then once McCoy is completely out of sight, he sags against the doorway, licking his lips, unable to remember what he picked out for his own costume and, possibly, his name. Not that it matters, because Jim will be attending that party even if he only has his skin and a tactfully placed vine leaf to cover his assets.
As Jim Kirk hurries back to the Captain’s quarters, in a sudden fit of clarity, he knows this year’s party is going to be fantastic—and potentially life-changing.
