“I can’t believe this,” the Enterprise’s chief medical officer repeats not for the first time that hour. “I can’t believe it.” When the man brushes his eyes with his arm, like his voice his demeanor disheartened, the officer ahead of him turns away from his study of a dilapidated structure, lowering the instrument in his hands, as if his companion’s despondency has reached the point where it can no longer be ignored.
