Another Year, Another Story

Date:

14

Well, those of you have who been with me through the last two holiday seasons know what this post is about. Expect general chaos, whining, slight spoilers, and one very determined, cranky, but pleased klmeri until December.

___

Title: TBD
Author: klmeri
Fandom: Star Trek AOS
Characters: Pike, Kirk, McCoy, others
Pairing: pre-Kirk/McCoy or hints of Kirk/McCoy (TBD)
Word Count: TBD
Rating: PG-13
Summary: Tis the season, and Christopher Pike had a life. In fact he had an expensive bottle of brandy, a backlog of party invitations, and the attention of the pretty brunette at the opposite end of the bar. These things only served to make his regret infinitely more poignant when he answered a call and was reminded he had something else in his life too: a boy named Jim Kirk. “Hey, Dad,” Jim shouted over a racket of noise, “bad news!” …and it was unfortunate news indeed. Jim was in jail. On Christmas Eve.

Or, the story in which Pike is a saintly Father of Christmas, Jim has fallen in with a gang of elves, and nobody but Jim’s best friend is confessing to the crime of who stole the North Star.

A/N: AU. Written for space_wrapped; based on the following prompt: Jim’s in jail on Christmas Eve. Does Bones bail him out? The answer to this prompt, when I first read it, was a clear no. That’s how I knew I had a story to write. Also, seeing as this is my third year participating in space_wrapped, I may be slightly on the masochistic side when it comes to writing fics That Want To Take Over My Life.

More details soon, along with a WIP post!

umm.. I do now. sometimes I don’t know how I have lived as long as I have since it seems as though at times I seem to just miss details such as this. Which of these recs is your favorite? I liked PlayTime the best maybe because I always liked kidJim.

Okay, confession time. When I was writing the synopsis and got to the part “Hey, Dad” I almost backspaced in complete surprise. I looked at it, then looked at it some more, and tried saying it in my head with Chris, Pike, sir, Captain, etc. None of it sounded right. And honestly? I almost thought, terrified, why am I going to do this to myself again? Because, yeah, Jim had to call him Dad and a backstory is already building itself in my head – who needs that? I considered taking an easy way out by maybe writing this as a Playtime ‘verse story. But as much as I would love to return to those characters some day, they simply aren’t these characters. Because, let’s face it… Playtime!Pike would NEVER leave his son Jim alone on Christmas Eve. He’s much too smart for that; he knows all kinds of trouble would just be waiting to happen! So this isn’t going to be as sweet, most likely, as Playtime is. And to answer your question, my favorite of the Playtime ‘verse is Ready, Set, RUN! for one reason: the scene with the engagement ring in the pudding. I can never remember that and not make an ‘awww’ sound and I’m the one who wrote it! LOL. I predict this story will give you a good laugh and please you as far as Pike is concerned. With the way For the Sake of Nothing is going, we may just need a father figure for Jim to ease our minds!

I believe we are both on the same wave-length as far as our boys are concerned. As I stated in my comment to your last chapter of For the Sake of Nothing I am ever the believer in happy endings. I believe in my little world that even in that story somehow, in someway Pike will do right by our Jim for all the right reasons lol. In some weird way I guess I believe that in all universes Pike is Jim’s guardian angel. I know … but I do believe, I do believe(Peter Pan) I guess there is some symbolism in there somewhere. I whole heartedly agree that Playtime Pike would never have left Jim on his own on Christmas eve. I loved the interaction between Pike/Jim/Archer in its various combinations in the Playtime Verse. The whole verse was warm and cuddly like puppies. I always had a soft spot for DaddyPike and Jim. Its just very appealing to me because I guess in my little world how wonderful is it that two people who need things out of life actually find the person who can give it to them–and enjoy doing it. Don’t be scared. I know nothing of what it’s like to have an inner literary voice but I think that I wished I did. Your inner voice seems to be right on so far so have at it. I eagerly await–it’s like an early Christmas present.

Pike should be Jim’s guardian; I swear it’s practically STXI canon. When he recruited Jim (and by that I mean challenged him), he automatically gained some responsibility for Jim being in Starfleet. Why wouldn’t he be invested in Jim and Jim’s career thereafter? AUs can be the basis for anything you want and how you want to tell it but there must be some semblance of our characters’ natures for them to ring true. Pike does sound like Pike to me, but he has always had such a strong voice that if I tried to force him into a more typical role, the story would just seem false to me. I have long since given up the notion that I am in control of story. It’s more about having a bit of faith I can interrupt my characters correctly. That’s why Jim is Jim but also not as focused as he usually is. Spock is Spock but he is more human because he really is one this time! And Leonard – well, Leonard is always Leonard to me, no matter the incarnation or the drama or the threats. They wanted to be in an AU this time and Pike right along with them! :) I truly love that you have taken the time to discuss this with me. You encourage me to find the truth of the story. So thank you!

you are very welcome. I miss being in college because I really loved the discussions we had during lecture. I unfortunately had to go out on permanent disability at 39 so I am away from that kind of intellectual stimulation. My most enjoyable classes were the one’s where we discussed the various aspects of the book we were assigned to read. Character motivation etc.. As for AUs I am of the same thoughts as you. Being true to the character’s nature is the whole point otherwise I guess it would just be a story with characters that had the same names in common but little else. I agree Pike has to be Jim’s guardian. Perhaps in this story he still is in the sense that Jim lives a life with little apparent purpose. I trust where ever you take this story but I think Pike will still end up giving Purpose and stability to Jim’s life. I am always up for discussion. Message me anytime if you need someone to bounce ideas off of on any subject.
