Title: Le fantôme de l’Opéra
Author: writer_klmeri
Rating: PG
Summary: Written years ago, as a project in French class. I adored reading Phantom of the Opera in French. This is a lovely little resulting poem.
un ombre glisse à côte du mur
l’Opéra est silencieux
deux exceptions—
le son de la respiration
et le petit cri d’un enfant
la salle est lié par la peur
montant à l’intérieur de lui-même
les ondes d’horreur
tout le monde regarde l’horloge
la première cloche vient de sonner
soudain l’ombre bouge
plus haut, plus haut
au dernier étage
la salle maudite attend au-dessous
un événement térrible ce soir!
Hélas, c’est le destin;
Le corps sans un coeur
L’homme sans merci
Le fantôme de l’Opéra
—
English Translation
a shadow glides beside the wall
the Opera is silent
two exceptions—
the sound of breathing
and the cry of a child
the room is bound by fear
rising within themselves
waves of horror
everyone watches the clock
the first bell rings
suddenly the shadow moves
higher, higher
to the top floor
the cursed room waits below for
a terrible event tonight!
Alas, it is destiny;
The body without a heart
The man without mercy
The Phantom of the Opera

Just perusing your master list. Have you ever done an English translation? Or would it lose something? I love looking at it, but I cannot read or understand French.
You know, I remember working very hard to write this in French – but for the life of me I can’t find the original English version. I recall the basics of each line… so I will attempt a rough translation at the bottom of the entry. :) I think it is lovelier in French though.
Thank you! While I’m sure I believe you when you say it is lovelier in French, this English translation is, itself, lovely.
