I Picked Up a Copy of Entertainment Weekly…

…which is something I rarely do, but it was the issue to address the summer blockbusters of 2013.

1. I knew about Iron Man 3 (going to see it on my b-day, yay!) and Star Trek Into Darkness (gosh, who isn’t counting the days?!) but not FAST & FURIOUS 6. HOW IN THE HELL DID I MISS THIS? It opens May 24th.

Apparently I am going to be living at the local movie theater next month?

2. There was a short Q&A with Zoe Saldana in the magazine about Spock/Uhura and her take on the pairing. Fascinating. She says:

Saldana: […] It’s always interesting when you tell the story of how two people come together and when you tell the story of how they end. But of how they’re living? That’s not as interesting, I guess, even though the middle part is what really matters. There were a lot of things for us to pick from, and there’s a lot [in the new film] for them to be tested by. Whether or not they stay together through this? That remains to be seen.
EW: You don’t sound very upbeat about their chances.
Saldana: The reality is it doesn’t matter what they do when they are young. They’re still going to end up, we know, being like the characters in the Gene Roddenberry series. If that’s the case, then they’re not going to be together forever, but to establish a history between them is beautiful.

Wow. I did not realize she felt that way about the Spock/Uhura relationship. Color me surprised!

3. More Channing Tatum this summer.

4. Will Smith thought up a movie and cast himself and his son Jaden in it? And it’s a M. Night Shyamalan movie without a twist ending? Wait, wait, wait. Another scifi film?

5. Brad Pitt is in a zombie movie?

6. Johnny Depp is playing Tonto. You mean, Tonto, as in The Lone Ranger‘s Tonto? Oh. my. god.

7. Then I learn there’s another Wolverine movie coming out, not to mention a Kick Ass 2, another 300 movie with a female warrior leading the action, and the Cassandra Clare book series I haphazardly started to read out of morbid-like curiosity is actually getting its first movie release this summer.

At this point I had to put down the magazine. I think I officially don’t know what the heck is going on this summer!

Crazy summer movie season is right. I’m thinking that I too will be spending a lot of time at the cinema this summer..lol say “cinema this summer” three times fast.. Zoe’s replies in this interview sure says a lot with these few words. Dare I think that if they are all going to end up like Gene Roddenberry’s characters then Bones will be in his rightful place with Kirk and Spock?…but oh no…please not the same Carol Marcus back story where Kirk is inadvertently a dead beat dad… ***what to think, what to think…*** I have purchased the tickets for my first (but not last) viewing of the movie..May 16 3D

I am really surprised that she said that, because JJ’s vision is that they don’t necessarily recreate TOS but make something similar in nature. Which allows for the possibility of Spock and Uhura to be together “forever”. I mean, it’s an alternate universe. IDIC. Is she doubting the part she’s been told to act?

I don’t know what to think..because no one has ever said this before, not even in a off beat manner.. I’m thinking she may also have had a WTF moment…depending on how far in advance this interview was done we might see some sort of “retraction” if you will.

I get what she was saying about what you do when you’re young isn’t the path you always end up on. I thought that was smart to say. I just didn’t realize she would take it as far as Spock and Uhura possibly not being together one day. Seems like it would upset those shippers. Then again maybe she’s not a S/U shipper herself.

I totally agree that what you do when you are young isn’t always the path you end up on. I guess it is just that I have heard more than once, from various actors, that this is the journey that will bring them to the same level of comraderie as TOS..just never heard it phrased quite this way.. caught me off guard more than anything I suppose

I don’t think she meant to imply a breakup at the end of the movie. I think maybe she wanted to say the two of them are not meant to last in her personal headcanon? I don’t know. That’s still a very fine line, though.

    1. Knew about all three. Wondering when the F&F series will end. 2. Well that’s enough to send the K/S shippers into a tizzy and to possibly upset the S/U shippers. 3. I may be the only woman on Earth who finds Tatum unattractive. Give my Karl Urban instead. Or is I want muscles I’ll go with Chris Hemsworth. 4. No comment on both bits of news. 5. Sounds interesting. I like Brad Pitt and would watch a zombie movie with him in it. He’s a decent actor. (Not my type visually, but I enjoy his acting.) 6. I saw the trailer for The Lone Ranger… 7. Even though I am disinterestedness in the X-Men franchise; the Wolverine trailer looks interesting. 8. (yes, I know you have no number 8… but relevant information and all that.) Much Ado About Nothing (June 7th) R.E.D. II (July 19) *Sadly no Karl Urban* Not Summer, but the new Riddick (Yay, more Karl!) comes out in September Thor 2 and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire in November Jack Ryan (Yay, more Chris Pine!) in December

And, completely unrelated to Star Trek, but Mark Ruffalo plays an FBI agent in a movie about magicians, “Now You See Me”. And it looks amazing.

      8. Thank you! I knew about Red 2 and Riddick and others you listed, but I was really surprised by the fact I must be living under a rock not to know more than I do. Maybe it’s because I haven’t been to the movie theater in a long time, and don’t watch cable? 3. I am not much of a Tatum fan either (except the dancing) but I thought it was interesting that he’s got another movie coming out. They’re like back to back. He seems to be popular. 2. I know! My thoughts exactly! 1. FF #7 is already underway, I’m pretty sure. I loved the first one, thus was glad for the fourth one (the sequel to the first), watched the fifth as well and liked it. Dwayne Johnson was interesting addition. But I will admit I don’t know how much farther this storyline can go without it getting truly, truly old for fans.

I stupidly anticipate the 6th Fast and Furious. Woe! And Riddick! (What IS my problem?) Love both so much! My first thought about the Spock/Uhura thing was ‘who knows, maybe Saldana likes slash fanfic.’ But seriously, even if that were her big secret, she is such a great actor she wouldn’t let that interfere with her job. But maybe the job includes Uhura reacting to a developing closeness between K and S in a very encouraging, empathic way.

In the right kind of movie, Vin Diesel is fun to watch. That’s why I will be watching both Riddick and FF6. (Not to mention Paul Walker in FF6 has his own brand of awesomeness.) But maybe the job includes Uhura reacting to a developing closeness between K and S in a very encouraging, empathic way. YES. XD
