AO3 Collection – Update

Date:

All multi-chaptered stories (and drabble series) are now available at AO3. I was surprised to find that combined, they made up 1.25 million words… So that means roughly 200,000 words can be attributed to my one-shots. It will be interesting to see how much of that 200k is K/S/M and how much is not pairing-based.

That said, I think I might divide the one-shots into series. What say you? Should all K/S/M one-shots go into a series or collection? Or will they be easy enough to find by a tag?

I am not the one to really say because i am so familiar with your work…so maybe wait and see how it goes and then decide?…..see if anybody indicates something in a comment or something… but if not too troublesome perhaps a series or collection with the tags would be a good idea

The tags you can have without being in a series. That way, people can search my works by pairing. But on the other hand, if I also put them in series, say called McSpirk, then somebody could just book mark the series and check to see if anything new is available.

I might be over-thinking this, though. Except for the fact it would be easy to put them in order now as opposed to going back later on.

I’m not sure what the advantage is of putting unrelated one-shots in a series is. Enlighten me please! I have been posting to AO3 for several years and only put stories that are sequels to each other in a series. If people want to find all my work listed all at once, they merely have to click on my author name to get a list of all the fandoms I’ve written in, and they can click on any fandom on that list to get all the stories listed. I admit, I am not tech savvy. I still don’t know all the tricks of the trade of AO3. As a reader, if I come across a story that says #6 in a series I won’t read it because I’ll feel like I have to read #1-5 first. So there might be people who would miss that story as an impulsive one-shot read, thinking it is a sequel to something they need to read first.

I know that’s the only disadvantage to a series is that it can be misleading. I thought about opening a collection instead BUT you cannot bookmark collections. It seems to me if I made it clear enough that the series is just for stand-alone oneshots, it would mitigate some of the confusion. I really want people to have something they can bookmark or subscribe too without having to go through 100+ stories to figure what’s what.

It would be nice if they had a way to “follow” an author so that any time an author you love puts up a new work you could be notified. (Maybe it exists and I haven’t found it?) Otherwise, all any fan needs to do is click on your name to get an all inclusive list of all your stories which they don’t have to hunt for but can click right on the list to bring up and read. But if you do want to put all your stories in a “series” you can always state under the description “this is a stand-alone story.” But I think “series” is actually meant for people who have written, say, 20 stories within a universe where Kirk turns into a werewolf every time Spock says “Fascinating” and then they can say “This is a story from beast666’s “werewolf” series” so people know exactly what they’re getting.

I know what it’s meant for. I’ve used it already for the true series. I wish too we had another option for organizing our works. The tagging is helpful, but at a certain point it becomes kind of ineffective, especially for someone like me who has written way too many stories. The thing, readers have told me they would like to be able to be notified when I add McSpirk stories but they don’t want to, as you say, subscribe to me as an author. I can understand this because what if I suddenly started writing in another fandom? Their inboxes would blow up with works they don’t even want to read. Thus the only solution I can think of is this “series” business. I might try to make a collection instead, but like I said, you can’t bookmark a collection. Otherwise the problem would be solved and I wouldn’t have to try to make a square peg fit into a round hole!
