What do you do when a main character dies *unexpectedly* in the middle of a fic? And by unexpectedly, I mean you didn’t plan it – it just happened.
Do you continue until the fic is done? Smack yourself and do a complete rewrite? Or weep into a bottle of gin?
On the other hand, what can you do if the character announces its intentions to die in the next scene?
Pull a McCoy and say, “Damn it, Jim! I’m not going to save your ass!” and then save Jim’s ass because you’re a doctor and it’s what you do?
Or pull a Spock, leap without looking (despite the odds that your efforts will be futile) and possibly save your Captain or kill you both?
SIGH.
Why, oh why, do I get the characters cursed to experience every form of dying in the universe?
BTW, this character is not James T. Kirk of the starship Enterprise. My brain simply thought that the analogy was appropriate.

It’s science fiction. You can always bring them back to life later. Otherwise: it’s time for the bottle of gin.
“Why, oh why, do I get the characters cursed to experience every form of dying in the universe?” Because we’re sadist and we like them to suffer? As for myself, when it happened that a character wanted or tried to die, I was successfull in dissuading them, but just because mine never really want to die.. If they did, I’d try to console myself somehow (I can’t even drink to forget..) Okay, the comment is stupid, but I don’t think you were really expecting a valid answer, right? :)
