6So I was just blithely typing along on my old desktop when my hard drive bit the dust. As in it made this sad little noise of dying (literally) and the computer shut down. Am I certain it’s physically dead? YES.

Let me say first that I DID have some backups of my most important files – audiobooks I paid for, bank account statements, all my fics, and my photos,…
EXCEPT MY MUSIC.
*sobs*
All 25 GB of my music.
*sobs some more*
If any of you out there agree that the world is only a happy place if it’s filled with music, you’ll understand my grief. Oh dear Lord. WHY THE MUSIC?!
UPDATE: Just so we aren’t all freaking out, I have ways to rebuild my collection slowly but surely. ALL IS NOT LOST. I also intend to use this mess to 1) make a zillion backups everywhere and 2) build a better music collection than the last. Let’s just say it’s a fresh start.

Oh, no! *hugs* I’m so sorry, m’dear! Because there is no life without music. It might be worth taking your computer to a Geek Rescue place and see if they can install it in another computer and possibly retrieve your files.

This is what torrents are for. It sucks but at least you can fix it.
Yeah ask around if you have any particular tech-y friends. A couple years back when I built my new computer (with old harddrive because I had a fairly large one to begin with), it turns out there was a short in the motherboard or case or somewhere, but basically it made the video card crash and then the hard drive got scrambled. The info was still there but the computer was like I DUNNO WUT U WANT. I had a friend offer to somehow nab the info off. I’m not tech savvy enough to say how, but it’s worth an asking. Also best idea for media back up – external hard drive. I reallllly need to get one for all my shows and music. That said, I sympathize and I’m sorry to hear about your computer’s passing.
very, VERY sorry to hear that! *hugs* 25 GB is really a lot.. last year my pen drive died and I almost had an heart attack because all of my fics and original stories were there and my backup on my laptop was nowhere to be found.. fortunately I found the backup, after a few hours, but they were probably the worst of my life!
