Movie Talk – SPOILERS!

Date:

14

I figure I ought to post about the trailer so we can discuss.

SPOILERS ENSUE!!!!!

Basically I’m gonna sum it up as:
Karl + Wetsuit brought to us by the gods of cinema! Now that surfing vid makes some kind of sense. XD

Also, Spock, melodrama much? Do you really want to die THAT badly? I think somebody needs to put him on the phone with Old Spock. ‘Cause he needs a firm talking to about his destiny.

Does Gary Mitchell have any healing abilities? Who is he supposed to be? Spock’s brother? (UGH, NO) Or someone else entirely?

Any thoughts?

I am so glad I am not the only one who thought Spock was being over the top! When I saw him raise his arms to accept his death… I honestly wanted to slap him and say “Bitch, please.” Harsh I know. I am unsure if Gary would have healing powers… though in TOS I think they used the term ‘God-like’ to describe him… so, that should be well within his realms of abilities… and it would also be well OUT of the range of Khan’s. Though he could be an original character as well. I am OK with Original or Mitchell… just not Khan. I do not think he is Sybok… he lacks the Vulcan ears. Really, my only thoughts are: ‘Thank the heavens McCoy is still McCoy and even more BAMF than before.’ XD And will still wait to see it until I hear from people/fans. (Though some opinions count more than others.)

It just brings home to me that this Spock is not the TOS version we are used to. He’s younger, more volatile (understandable the death of his entire planet, not to mention his mother), and less experienced. Whereas Old Spock does the dramatic and traumatic with reserve, this Spock won’t quite fit that bill. Being logical isn’t the only thing that makes Spock, well, Spock, now is it? Then again, Kirk is maturing as well. What I saw of Pine’s performance, I am convinced he is going to deliver us an awesome Kirk.

WETSUITS..nuff said on that. Bones has a much bigger presence in this movie, which I’m so glad about. I have a thing for wanting to see bones and jim’s work relationship improve and grow after the first films events..bones supporting jim not so much. It seems from this spoiler that Bones is involved directly with jim on missions and in decision making..much to my delight. The observation on Spock’s death issues has been mentioned on a few other sites. It seems as though this spock is more atune to his human side than vulcan. It is the loss of him mother and planet that causes this..IMO Lastly some of the hardcore trekkies think it could be Robert April. He had healing abilities given him by some aliens (name?) and lived in London during his life. Pike took over for him as Captain when they had the tv show..in novels George Kirk has connections with him as well He was a member of star fleet but to what extent later in his life I’m not sure..I am paraphrasing what I read. I’m not real sure on all the facts but there is some connections here. If I recall Captain April was on rescue ship sent to Tarsus but that could be from our fics here..anyway food for thought..

I did not get to see it so I can’t weigh in on the first two. :( As far as I can see in the screenshots, Cumberbatch’s character doesn’t have Vulcan ears, so unless it’s a version of Sybok with dominant human genes, that doesn’t pan out. But in TOS Gary Mitchell did have healing abilities, didn’t he? *goes to check* Granted, I’ve not had time to trawl around to see what the word is on the whole thing, but am I the only one that thinks the name John Harrison is way too lame to be anything but a placeholder to not give the game away? (I keep imagining Pine’s Kirk having a JOOOOOOOOOHN moment if they turn him into Khan, and just….no.)

Did you see the new trailer? Who in the blue uniform shirt jumped off the building? I don’t like either option! :( For me, Khan just isn’t it. People are delirious to think otherwise. Did Mitchell have healing abilities that he could use on other people? Also, I know it isn’t Sybok. But somebody photoshopped Cumberbatch with pointy ears at some point. Crazy!

No, I didn’t know there was a new trailer! D: Where???? ETA: Never mind, found it. *shivers* Much better. That’s what I wanted to see in the first one, thx very much. I do have to say I’m a bit chuffed that they seem to have taken the same angle I chose to use in my XI Big Bang fics. I like that I apparently thought the same as the writers about the characters, and that gives me hope that maybe my head canon isn’t about to be screwed up totally by the new movie. :) I’ll have to go rewatch WNMHGB now, because I can’t remember the extent of Mitchell’s powers. I definitely hope they’re not going to go the route of Khan; besides the fact that it’s slaughtering a sacred cow for many old-school Trekkies, it’s too predictable and I want to see something new. I personally was really hoping that if it wasn’t Mitchell, they’d go the route of Trelane, because I love him. :) But I’m leaning more toward some reinventing of Kodos personally, if it’s not Mitchell. To me he makes much more sense, especially since the whole Tarsus IV issue was entirely avoided in the XI movie. It fits with the Doomsday angle and is grim enough for a dark XIverse movie plot. They could very much play it up and it would fit right into the whole synopsis and what I’ve seen so far. Though admittedly from what I’ve seen, I may be the only one with that backup theory.

I haven’t watched the 9 minute preview; there are no IMAX cinemas anywhere near me and I can’t afford to go out of my way to watch The Hobbit in order to see it. However, I’ve seen both the Announcement Trailer and the first Teaser Trailer and I’ve read people’s reviews of the preview. Personally, I’m of the opinion that this really is someone new, but he has snippits of other characters all merged together. As more than one person has said, healing abilities were NOT in Kahn’s repertoire, so it definitely ain’t him! Plus, all my hopes seem to be coming true: Bones has a more solid role! Well… at the start, at least. :P As for Spock? He’s jumped forwards in terms of accepting his humanity in this reality. However, it’s never going to be that easy, is it? I’m willing to bet that he’s still going to have problems accepting his place within the crew and his views on his own self-worth.
